The first Barbecue Pit family restaurant opened on December 16, 1947, inside the Maryland Hotel on 6th Avenue in downtown San Diego. It was started by Joe and Lila Browning and Ed and Mella Jenson—two couples, with Lila and Mella being sisters.

Excellent home style barbecue. Got the beef ribs, brisket & chickens the ribs were fall off the bone, juicy. Chicken was nice & moist., and the brisket was pull-apart, soft & melt-in-your-mouth. Had it with the beans and fries. Excellent combo if you ask me, I don't know if I've ever had better French fries, flavorful without any salt or ketchup! 10/10 would be coming here again WITH FRIENDS
I've been eating at The Barbeque Pit , Fletcher hills for 30yrs. My go to favorite is the beef sandwich plate. The meat has always been fork tender and their sauce is my absolute favorite. The meats have great flavor which are not overpowering like some BBQ restaurants. I describe the food as simple and delicious.
Best pizza in town, hands down. We tried the margherita and the spicy salami - both had perfectly thin, crispy crusts and rich tomato sauce. The ingredients were fresh and full of flavor. Loved the open kitchen concept where you can see the chef tossing the dough. Super casual, but with quality you'd expect from a fancier place. Great for a casual date or dinner with friends.
We like this place. Meats are great, sides are great. Prices are very reasonable and portions are on point. Service was very good and they were really patient with us. Kept a smile on their faces and politely answered questions about the menu. Overall a gem in Fletcher Hills.
